How often have you heard someone say, "My father/mother always said...or "My coach used to say...? Chances are, the best teachers you've had are the ones you can still quote. The ability to distill a lot of wisdom into a few words is the hallmark of great teaching. A well-placed proverb, quote, or pithy saying can focus and clarify one's thinking marvelously.

Venerable Master Hsing Yun, like all great teachers, has also been a great student. Over the past few years, he has written about a collection of one hundred quotes, things he heard from his teachers, his fellow students, ancient Chan masters, modern lay devotees--in short, from any and every possible source of wisdom.
